Robot bartenders, huge virtual balconies and internet speeds you can only imagine – Royal Caribbean’s two newest cruise ships have reached a whole other galaxy with cutting-edge features and technologies.
The Quantum-class ships, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, are easily the most futuristic vessels ever to set sail on the high seas. Each 167,800-ton ship has 18 decks and 2,090 staterooms in which to pack high-tech features. And they manage to sneak them in where you least expect it – from the very moment you check in.
Take a look at some of the incredible high-tech features
Online check-in: Before you even step aboard, this “smart” ship makes check-in a breeze. Jump online to generate boarding documents, upload your photo for security and get your digital boarding confirmations. Skip the queues – you’ve got everything you need to go from shore to ship in ten minutes.
Smart luggage tracking: Use your smartphone to track your luggage in real time. It’s tagged with RFID (radio frequency identification) so you can track it from the drop-off point to your stateroom.
The Bionic Bar: Time for a drink? Head to the brand new venue where you’ll be served by robot bartenders – the first of their kind in the world. Simply place your order on a Windows tablet (built exclusively for the ship), and watch as the robot arms mix your cocktail with flair. Apparently, it can mix 120 drinks per hour! Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.
SeaPods: Kids of all ages will love the SeaPods in the SeaPlex. Thanks to the ship's speedy internet, you can play Xbox Live for hours and hours.
Roboscreens: Two70 is a huge showroom with more than one ‘wow’ factor. It has six "Roboscreens" that unite or move as one. There’s also an exciting new feature, Vistarama, which transforms the floor-to-ceiling windows into a massive canvas for 18 projectors. And during the day, there are 270-degree views to enjoy.
In-room technology: It might not be the most exciting feature onboard, but we think it's pretty handy. Every stateroom has USB charging ports to charge up your tablets, devices, smartwatches and any other techie devices.
Virtual Balconies: One of the most-talked-about features is the virtual balconies in the interior rooms. The 80-inch “windows” provide a real-time view of the sea, so you never miss out on the spectacular vistas.
High-tech service: On these futuristic cruise ships, even the crew are armed with apps and tablets specifically designed to give an amazing level of care and service.
Energy efficiency: The ship itself has been designed to use power and lighting more efficiently. We told you it was smart!
‘appy Cruising: There are two new apps for guests: Cruise Planner and Royal iQ. When downloaded onto your smart device, they act as a personal concierge letting you book spa appointments, dinner reservations, tickets to a show and more. You can also access maps of the decks and chat or call people back on-shore.
Speedy Wi-Fi: With all this technology, it’s a good job the ship has a fast internet connection! Royal Caribbean worked with O3b Networks to connect the ships to satellites flying in a lower orbit. Because the signal doesn’t have to travel as far, guests can finally enjoy faster upload and download speeds at sea.
Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas launched from Southampton in May 2014, joining Quantum of the Seas.
