Sun Princess Ship Details

Sun Princess

Sun Princess

Timelessly elegant yet luxuriously serene, Sun Princess blends big ship entertainment with a small ship atmosphere. Operated by Princess Cruises, Sun Princess is filled with an array of facilities to suit every traveller. Cruisers can fill their days with the vast program of activities ranging from enrichment classes and poolside movies to wine-tasting sessions and golf practice. Or simply relax in one of the five whirlpools, three outdoor swimming pools and luxurious onboard health spa. With more than 400 affordable balcony staterooms on offer, Sun Princess is a glorious way to explore destinations including the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Japan and sets sail from Australia year-round.

A Little History

Built in Monfalcone, Italy, Sun Princess began life as the largest vessel ever to be built in the cruise industry. At over 70,000 tonnes, she was bigger than Cunard’s QE2. She has since been overtaken in size, but continues to offer fantastic features and amenities coupled with a more intimate atmosphere. Sun Princess embarked on her maiden cruise on 2 December 1995 and arrived in Sydney in October 2007 to offer year-round cruises from Sydney, Fremantle and Melbourne. She was refurbished in April 2010.

Sun Princess has had her fair share of stardom. Her biggest claim to fame is that the television show The Love Boat: The Next Wave was filmed on Sun Princess. In 2007, Sun Princess made the news when she became the largest ship to sail beneath Sydney Harbour Bridge – there were just 2.5 metres to spare.

Ship’s Design

Weighing in at 70,000 tonnes and stretching 261 metres in length, Sun Princess isn’t the largest cruise ship afloat but undoubtedly creates a comfortable, intimate cruising atmosphere for her 1,998 guests. Every part of Sun Princess exudes sophistication and glamour, from the breathtaking four-deck atrium to each of her stunning balcony staterooms. Her recent upgrade introduced popular onboard venues: The Sanctuary, an adult’s only retreat, and the Movies Under the Stars poolside cinema.

On Board the Sun Princess

Standard cabins provide a fresh décor of light timber tones with pastel coloured soft furnishings, with plenty of storage, safe, mini refrigerator, and television. Each onboard stateroom offers impeccable service – from the moment passengers are met by crew and accompanied to their stateroom, to the turndown service with chocolates every evening and fresh fruit on request.

Daytime Entertainment

Sun Princess offers the popular Scholarship@sea program, where passengers can learn a new skill while onboard. Shipboard experts and guest lecturers run courses on a whole variety of topics including visual arts, cooking, computer skills, pottery and photography. The ship’s library and writing room, world-class art collection, gallery and auctions will continue your journey of cultural enrichment.

If relaxation is what you desire, Sun Princess boasts three pools and five whirlpool spas for its guests to enjoy, including the Riviera Pool and Lotus Spa Pool. The perfect cruising spot can be found at the splash pool, complete with sunning decks and an outdoor Splash Bar serving icy cold drinks. While golf enthusiasts will love the opportunity to practice their swing on the golf simulator on the Sun Deck.

Fitness and Relaxation

Sun Princess is designed with the perfect balance of fitness and relaxation features. Challenge friends to a game of basketball, paddle tennis, and shuffleboard on the outdoor sports court. Or throw on those running shoes and enjoy the ocean views along the jogging track around the Promenade Deck. Inside, the state of the art gym has everything any fitness fanatic could need: the latest cardio and toning equipment, plus a daily program of exercise classes, including yoga, Pilates and aerobics for a small charge.

After all your activities, find true relaxation in the Lotus Spa. Here, you can indulge in the luxury of some true “me” time with a choice of treatments designed for men and women. Choose one or two relaxing therapies or treat yourself to a full day of pampering. There are even some special teen treatments on offer perfect for some true mother-daughter time.

Entertainment by Night

As day turns to night, Sun Princess passengers can enjoy a variety of music, comedy and shows in the Vista Lounge and 550-seat Princess theatre. Princess Cruises is known for its first-class choice of entertainment, so you can be sure to enjoy some captivating shows, performers, singers and dancers on the high seas.

On a balmy night, head out on deck for Movies Under the Stars, the large-screen outdoor cinema showing movies, concerts, sporting events and more. And if you’re feeling lucky, wander to the Grand Casino to place a bet at the roulette, blackjack, and craps tables.

The three stunning indoor bars are the perfect place to meet old and new friends. Looking out onto the Grand Plaza, a dazzling four-story atrium with floating staircase and stained-glass dome, the Atrium Bar & Lounge will let you begin your night in style. Listen to the classical sounds of the string quartet or show tunes on the piano as you watch the world go by. Then will it be the Crooners Martini Bar for a cocktail and piano sing-along or the Wheelhouse Bar for its handsome surroundings? As the dance-floor beckons, the best beats can be found in the onboard nightclub until the small hours.

Don’t forget to pack your fancy dress because Princess Cruises are known for hosting some of the best parties afloat. Depending on the itinerary, passengers will be invited to Caribbean limbo contests, country western hoedowns, and black and white balls.

Fine Cuisine

With eight restaurants onboard the Sun Princess, a gourmet experience awaits! There are two main dining rooms offering traditional dining at same time every meal and your own waiter throughout the cruise: Regency Dining Room and Marquis Dining Room.

This highly acclaimed vessel set a new standard in cruise ship design and onboard choice when it debuted in 1995. The 1,950-passenger ship rises 14 stories and measures nearly three football fields in length. Our ships may be big, but they don't feel big. That's because we used our extra space not to cram in more people but to create more small intimate places. Our deck plans offer lots of restaurants, theatres, bars, swimming pools and so on. We call it "big ship choice and small ship feel".
