Carnival Spirit Ship Details

Carnival Spirit

Carnival Spirit

Carnival Spirit is reported as the biggest and newest passenger cruise ship to call Australia home, all year round. A cruise ship for Carnival Cruise Lines, Carnival Spirit offers cruises from Sydney to New Caledonia, Vanuatu, New Zealand and Fiji. She is packed to the brim with entertainment for the whole family, with highlights including the onboard waterpark “Carnival Waterworks” and the waterslide “Green Thunder”, billed as the steepest slide afloat. It’s no coincidence she’s known as the Fun Ship!

A little history

Carnival Spirit originally called North America home. It was only in 2012 that she arrived in Sydney for the long haul, and in doing so, became the first Carnival ship to be based outside the USA permanently. Before arriving in Sydney, the ship was refitted with a range of exciting additions, including the “Green Thunder” waterslide, a waterpark, outdoor barbecue area, and serenity deck. She was also fitted with Australian powerpoints and the on-board currency was switched to the Australian dollar.

Ship’s design

Carnival Spirit features 12 passenger decks, with the atrium spanning across 10 decks. Carnival Spirit carries a maximum of 2,124 passengers in 1,062 staterooms, along with a 961-strong crew. A massive 80% of staterooms are situated on the outside of the ship, enjoying an ocean view, with 80% of these outside cabins featuring balconies. There are also six luxurious penthouse suites of 36 square metres and 44 suites of 27 square metres.

Spanning 292.6 metres and weighing 85,500 tonnes, Carnival Spirit is powered by diesel-electric machinery, including six diesel engines. She has a service speed of 22 knots (40.74 km/h)

On board Carnival Spirit

Carnival Spirit features a range of accommodation options, varying in size. A large proportion of staterooms (80% to be precise) is located on the outside of the ship and enjoys ocean views. Of these, 80% have balconies measuring about six square metres. For those looking for a spacious stateroom, the suites offer a very comfortable 25.5 square metre space, with Penthouse Suites spanning a luxurious 32 square metres. Even the inside cabins, of which there are 213, are quite roomy compared to standard cabins.

For families and large groups, there are 42 sets of interconnecting staterooms with various arrangements on offer. In addition, the quad staterooms (with or without a balcony) can be configured to accommodate four people. The ship also features 16 cabins with wheelchair access.

All standard staterooms include twin beds that can be converted into a king bed as required. Each room also features a flat-screen TV, vanity / desk, phone, security box, hair dryer, mini-bar, climate control and plenty of cupboard space.

On Deck Adventures

Wow – Carnival Spirit isn’t called the “Fun Ship” for nothing! At the centre of it all, the water park features the world’s steepest floating water slide – complete with a 10-metre vertical drop. Junior cruisers can enjoy SplashZone, a mini water park with racing slides, giant tipping bucket, and a “spray and splash” playground.

The sports deck will get you up and moving with the 360-degree open-air jogging track. Splash out in three large swimming pools and two Jacuzzis on the pool deck, or dabble in dodge-ball, volleyball, basketball, and cricket on the sports courts. There’s also mini-golf, Ping-Pong tables, and a golf simulator.

After all the fun, you can get away from it all on the adults-only Serenity deck, the perfect spot to lie back and chill out with a good book. There’s only one decision to make: hammock or day bed?

Work out, chill out

If fitness is a priority (especially after all the beautiful food!), the two-deck fitness area has all the equipment and fitness classes you could ask for, complete with ocean views.

Then, after your workout, why not pop over to the two-tiered Spa Carnival for a relaxing aromatherapy massage, facial, or pedicure?

Kids only

Carnival Spirit is a paradise for kids thanks to the inclusive children’s programs. There are five age groups with separate activities and hangouts to suit all ages, from toddlers to teens. The kids’ areas are packed with fun facilities such as large-screen TVs, Nintendo Wii, video games, arts and crafts stations, toys and games, and more. In addition, younger kids will enjoy face painting, magic shows, scavenger hunts, and can even hone their cooking skills in fun pizza-making workshops. Kids aged from 12 to 14 years can kick back in an exclusive lounge filled with games consoles, a dance floor and a variety of supervised activities. Teens have the run of Club O2, a cool lounge where they can watch movies, dance and enjoy “mocktails”.

If you want to enjoy a kid-free night out, the ship also provides group babysitting from 10pm to 3am for a low cost, as well as late-night kids’ parties (Night Owls) for all age groups. However, in-cabin babysitting is not available.

With 16 bars and lounges, Carnival Spirit boasts so many entertainment choices, you can enjoy something different every night of your cruise. From the smooth sounds of the Club Cool jazz bar to the large-scale shows in Pharaoh’s Palace, there’s something for everyone.

Pharaoh’s Palace is a vast show room, stretching across three levels and seating almost 1,200 guests. It provides extraordinary venue for Vegas-style shows, comedians, and song and dance performances. For a more intimate show, the Versailles Lounge seats around 320 guests.

If it’s a good singsong you’re after, Club Cool is the place to be. Pull up a chair to enjoy the karaoke talent or take the mike for yourself. Alternatively, find your spot on a bar stool in Shanghai Bar and reminisce as the pianist plays all your favourites.

For sports lovers, Champions' Sports Bar features wide-screen TVs and a cigar bar. Or if you fancy your luck, hit the Louis XIV casino where you’ll find your favourite casino games, as well as a bar and bandstand. Then when it’s time for a dance, head to the Dancin’ Dance Club and let loose until the wee hours.
